National Service had been implemented in September, 1939, after the outbreak of the Second World War. The last call-ups were in 1960, with the final National Serviceman being demobbed two years later in 1962.
Among that last group who arrived at the Berwick depot to begin their two-year stint as soldiers with the 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers, were football players who would go on to play for teams like Scotland, Aston Villa, Spurs, Hearts and Leicester City.
